Asking for a blessing

I've had the opportunity to give two blessings this week and to receive one myself. I want your opinion on this matter. One of the blessings I gave was asked for while I was prompted to offer to give the second one. I think that in the ideal situation a priesthood holder should live in such a way that those around him should feel comfortable asking for a blessing, but I don't think that a lot of women (or men for that matter) feel like they can ask for a blessing.

Sometimes I think that we don't excercise the Melchizedek priesthood as much as we should. Thomas S. Monson Said, "I know of no experience more sweet or feeling more precious than to heed a prompting only to discover that the Lord has answered another person's prayer through you." I think that when we give a blessing we are doing this. I have had to learn that it is ok to ask for a blessing if you need one. Can it be excessive if we ask for blessing too often? How often is too often? What is your opinion about asking for a blessing?

Good thoughts, good questions...

I gained a testimony of asking for blessings last year. 2005 was my year of asking for blessings because I had a lot of trials that I didn't know how to deal with any other way. I was talking to one of my roommates one evening and I asked practically these same questions. She said she'd been told by our bishop that the Lord is willing and eager to bless us whenever we are in need and have the faith to ask...she said it was ok to ask for a blessing daily if that is what you feel you need. God is good and never tires of being sought by His children!
I'm glad you were able to have that experience!

Growing up without a dad would've been really hard had my mom not made the priesthood a major part of my life. Each year we would get a "father's" blessing from our home teachers for school. The men of the priesthood went out of their way to make sure we were taken care of, temporally as well as spiritually. That, to me, is a priesthood blessing. There've been many times in my life when I have been healed by the laying on of hands, including when I broke my elbow in the MTC and was able to take my cast off only a week after surgery.

I think having a Priesthood blessing not only blesses the one receiving it but the brothern giving it. You
should never be afraid to give a blessing or be afraid to ask for one.
I myself have had many an experience having a blessing and I would not want to be without one. Trust
Priesthood over Medical knowledge as the Lord is in charge. Sometimes it is necessary to seek medical aassistance but a blessing comes first. I not only have faith the Lord but in those giving the blessing. Sometimes, I have had to get another blessing on top of the one I had before. Sometimes its the brothern giving it I don't feel comfortable with but generally all goes well.

So long as they are not of a vulgar nature any questions are welcome.

Now sometimes its just hard for some of us. When we havent had the oppertunity to grow up with the priesthood then sometimes we just really dont know how to ask. I am grateful for the oppertunity i have had to gain a knowledge and to know that God's authority is on the earth again. How blessed we are. Thanks for being such a great friend and knowing when I needed you!
